World Basketball Day is December 21st. The origin of basketball can be traced back to 1891 at the YMCA in Springfield, MA. Created by Dr. James Naismith, this popular sport is now estimated to be played by over 450 million people globally.
Basketball is very popular at our outdoor summer day camps and youth programming at the Scantic Valley YMCA branch. Each year we need to resupply our basketballs because of the heavy use they receive from the children.
